The personal exhibition of book bindings by Virginija Ligeikienė
M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, V. Putvinskio St. 55, Kaunas
The Vilnius Bookbinders Guild presents the personal exhibition of book bindings by Virginija Ligeikienė
V. Ligeikienė‘s works incorporate the evolution of professional craft and fine arts. Influenced by new restoration experiences and the tendencies of contemporary bookbinding it seems to be experiencing quite vigorous development.
For her works the artist chooses warm range of colours, avoids much ornamentation so as to gain pictorial lyricism, but prefers to highlight the texture and colours of a material. Some works, however, are marked with figurative and plot motifs. There are also semi-leather covers; canvas is adapted in folk art theme. Some books are complemented with boxes the size and decor of which are well matched to a book. The box provides a cover the additional protection, and thus increases the bibliophylic value. The author also performs marble imitation for flyleaf paper, tries different binding methods.
V. Ligeikienė finished leather art studies at the Tallinn Art Institute, studied art history at Vytautas Magnus University, is a member of Lithuanian Artists' Association and Vilnius Bookbinders Guild.
