For the first time in Lithuania is presented the creation of the famous German painter and sculptor Johannes Hänsch (18751945) who was active in Berlin, participated in the Munich art exhibitions, was a laureate of painter C. Blechen prize.

Fascinated in painting J. Hänsch entered in 1897 the Berlin Royal Academy. There he was inspired by famous landscape painters of the 19th – 20th centuries P. Vorgang and F. Kallmorgen.

From 1902 J. Hänsch began participating in exhibitions in Berlin. Supported by F. Kallmorgen he exhibited his works in the annual exhibitions organized by Berlin Artists' Union. Having graduated from the Berlin Royal Academy in 1905-1912 the artist continued studies at the Berlin Academy of Arts under A. Hertel.

During the study years and later J. Hänsch actively participated in art symposiums, traveled a lot. The great collection of his works capture sights of Berlin and its surroundings, the Sielt dunes, the shores of the North Sea, the Sudetes and the Alps.

A large collection of paintings by J. Hänsch was donated to Lithuania by a great patriot, patron Mykolas Žilinskas. After settling in West Berlin, M. Žilinskas began collecting works of art and after the artist's death he purchased most of J. Hänsch'es legacy. The whole collection, mostly landscapes and still lifes is stored at M. Žilinskas Art Gallery in Kaunas.
