Kaunas Picture Gallery, K. Donelaičio St. 16

Opening on 19th of October at 6 p.m.

The exhibition cycle The Names of the Generation of the Break presents Antanas Obcarskas’ paintings

An inclination for the expressive painterly manner revealed itself already with A. Obcarskas’ initial works which seemed to keep balance between abstract art and figure images. He did not avoid bright, contrasting colours, moreover, in his early creation Obcarskas was apt at implicating elements of play and intrigue. Such playful palette was mostly evident in 1993 when the painter became a member of the Angis group. The artist moved from the two-dimensional to a spatial form – took up the creation of installations and objects. The most distinct among them are the installation The Sky (1996) and metal objects Baronka I and Baronka II (2001).

The specific element of play hidden in the artist's creative nature revealed the creative affinity with Jurgis Mačiūnas and his Fluxus movement. In 2002 his work Kaunas Air had complemented the Fluxus exhibition at the Kaunas Picture Gallery.

Since 2004 the installation period has been replaced by large-format works with minimal range of colour (A Black Poem on the Loss of Illusions, Three Irregular Planes). From 2012 the artist began developing the op art interpretation in his works Acrylic Letters. Such an engrossing combination of a two-dimensional and bas-relief painting, abstraction and content is presented at the exhibition.

The exhibition cycle The Names of the Generation of the Break observes the changes in the artists' creative work. The intense eagerness to seize a new style and expression is the distinguishing feature of Obcarskas’ painting. Each new trend in his work is purposive and by no means coincidental, and that is the most essential characteristic.

A. Obcarskas’ (born in 1958) art studies started in 1973 at Stepas Žukas Art School (J. Vienožinskis Faculty of Arts at Kaunas College ). From 1977 to 1982 he studied at the State Institute of Art in Vilnius (now VAA).

The artist has been participating in exhibitions since 1982. In 1990 he joined the Lithuanian Artists' Union. Since 2002 he is an art teacher at Kaunas A. Martinaitis Art School. Since 2011 Obcarskas is a member of the Focus Europa Group of German Artists, a participant of the international exhibitions – (the 54th Venice Biennial, 2011, NordArt 2014 (Germany), the 6th and 7th Beijing International Art Biennial (2015, 2017).
