Date: 9 November 2017 18:30 - 31 December 2017 17:00

M. Žilinskas art gallery, Nepriklausomybės Sq. 12, Kaunas

The international exhibition "CONTEMPORARY EXPRESSIONISM IN FRANCE AND ITS MARGINS", dedicated to the centenary of the Declaration of Lithuania’s Indepedence.

The exhibition reflects the diversity of expressionistic conception in the arts, which is close to the development of Lithuanian art from the conceptual and historical points of view. The principles of Lithuanian modernism have been stimulated by the artists’ studies, cognition and scholarships at the Paris Schools of Art. The French art tradition began to emerge gradually in Lithuanian art in the early 20th century first of all thanks to Justinas Vienožinskis who was one of those artists who studied at the Paris art centres. The consolidation of modern tendencies was due to artist Adomas Galdikas who lived and studied in Paris, as well as other painters of the ARS group – Antanas Gudaitis, Viktoras Vizgirda and Antanas Samuolis being influenced by modern trends of French art have become art reformers in Lithuania. It was the French modern school that had traced the line for the Lithuanian colourist school. Consequently, the exhibitions of Lithuanian artists in Paris had opened a wide spectrum of recognition.

The exhibition curator Christian Noorbergen, who is world-famous art critic and lecturer, author of over hundred books and catalogues, project curator in Europe and elsewhere, selected works by Expressionist artists in France and other European countries.

On the display we observe works of art by 13 artists: painters Francis-Olivier Brunet, Nicolas Gasiorowski, Cristine Guinamand, Serge Labegorre, Niyaz Najafov, Jean Louis Nehlich, Olivier De Sagazan, Gerard Stricher, Johan Van Mullem, sculptors Robert Sobocinski, Rūta Jusionytė, Marc Petit and photography artist Marc Kruger.
