The exhibition "Pranas Domšaitis. Pastels"

Date: 30 November 2017 00:00 - 01 January 2018 00:00

A. Žmuidzinavičius Creations and Collections Museum, V. Putvinskio St. 64, Kaunas

The exhibition „Pranas Domšaitis. Pastels“.

The exhibition presents a part of P. Domšaitis' legacy – a collection of pastels preserved by the relatives of singer and pedagogue Adeleide Armhold. Pastels created by artist Pranas Domšaitis, the singer’s spouse, became the basis of the collection.

P. Domšaitis is one of the most outstanding expressionists among Lithuanian emigration artists, who grew up and formed in the framework of the German Academy of Art, exhibited his works in joint exhibitions with K. Schmidt-Rotluff, Ch. Soutine, E. Nolde, M. Chagall.

Religious scenes predominate. The most numerous is the group from the cycle Flight to Egypt, illustrating P. Domšaitis’ words as he lay dying: "I am always on the road ...". Slightly smaller is the group Crucifixion, alongside two more pictures are exhibited – Adoration of the Magi and Worship of the Shepherds.

The exhibition is supplemented by eight landscapes, five portraits, and several more paintings depicting ships and pets. Two pastels have remained unfinished, some are double-sided.
