FUTURE PERFECT shows key positions in contemporary artistic production in Germany and brings together works by 16 artists living in Germany, who all work in diverse media – film, photography, sculpture, objects, painting and collage. The works in this exhibition explore visions of the future and speculate about the course of history.

The “future perfect” of the title refers to the tense of the verb that expresses the completion of an action in the future: something will have been. The future perfect is a preview from the past and a form of speculation. Today, the future seems to be a critical concept, and even the near future is almost impossible to anticipate given all our digital and mobile acceleration. The fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany and the end of Cold War thinking not only “globalized” the world of economics. It also meant the end of many European ideas and mindsets.

This exhibition project reflects on the promises and horizons the future brings. Can we come to an understanding concerning the speculative future perfect? How do artists take up a position on material, form, imagination, action or narration? How do they reflect the past anew? Where do they see options for action? The works on show develop future options for imagination and action. They are shaped by striking formal idioms and they transfer key social questions into artistic concepts.
