Eimutis Markūnas exhibition “The Colour Code of the City. Black”

Date: 30 May 2019 17:00 - 07 July 2019 00:00

Kaunas Picture Gallery, K. Donelaitis str. 16, Kaunas,

May 30, Thursday, 5 p.m.

Opening of Eimutis Markūnas exhibition “The Colour Code of the City. Black”.

In the past years, E. Markūnas concentrates on the concept of a city in his work, analyses its’ psycho-geographic map and the tensions within. In earlier exhibitions on this theme, the artist referred to colours, their substance and metaphysics.

The encoded atmosphere and mood of Kaunas city districts opened up in the bright large-format abstractions. In the continuation of the project “Black”, E. Markūnas is completely different. Like day and night. Here the artist presents small-format drawings, moving from apotheosis for colors to mystical and subtle monochrome.

The works resemble the negatives of photographs, where various shapes are captured: from recognizable human images to hardly named mystical beings. In this exhibition, the artist turns to the dark side, existentially examines his night states, emotions, the characters met, and talks with them. In such chamber dialogues, the artist seeks to know himself, identify with the city, feel like a small, creative and complementary particle of a larger network.

E. Markūnas graduated from the Monumental Arts, has been actively working in this field for more than twenty years, but never identified himself with it.

In creative searching he tested photography, installation, object and video art tools. The artist presented several dozen of personal exhibitions and projects in Lithuania and abroad. He constantly participates in group exhibitions and various initiatives of topical art. Since 1990 he is a member of Lithuanian Artists‘ Association. Since 1991 he is a member of painters‘ group “Angis”. For more than 30 years, E. Markūnas has been doing a pedagogical work.
